Trailer Round-Up - Week of 14th August 2011 - Lollipop Chainsaw, Asura's Wrath, Arkham City and more!

Hi guys, so I don't know if you noticed but it tends to get a little bare around here on the weekends, what with everyone not going into work and either reporting or making news, so I had an idea to give you something to whittle a few minutes out of your Sunday. Welcome to the trailer round-up, where I will pick the coolest trailers of the week and slap them on here for your perusal. I thought it up a few days ago when I added a trailer for Owlboy to the daily News. I felt kind of weird about it, because, well, it wasn't news, it was just a trailer I thought looked good, so I figure from now on I'll kill 2 birds with one stone and get a post out on sundays whilst still being able to showcase a few of the lesser known games that are in the works. and so, without further ado, the round-up!

Batman: Arkham City - Welcome Mr Freeze!

Have an ice day... (not proud of myself)

Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3 - 6 New Characters Kick The Shit Out Of Each Other

This trailer makes the game look good, but I promise you, it's not (although admittedly it still looks sexy as hell)

Asura's Wrath - Gameplay

Oh. My. God. Yes. Put. It. In. My. Eyes.

Lollipop Chainsaw - Zombie Death And Rainbows

Scantily clad cheerleader with chainsaw is the new bald space marine (fingers crossed!)

UFC Undisputed 3 - New And Improved

Sounds like they're making changes in all the right places, here's hoping for a better sequel than the last one.

Ridge Racer Unbounded - Create And Destroy

Let's hope the editor is versatile enough that your city will feel unique

Dark Souls - Monsters A-plenty!

Dark Souls is the sequel to Demons Souls, and as such terrifies me with it's very existence, love me a good CG monster though!

Rock Of Ages - Rock Beats Everything

BEST TRAILER!

Burnout: Crash - Crash, Slam, Burn

I wasn't sold on this idea at first, but it looks okay enough

Daily News - 18th and 19th August 2011 - Portal 2 DLC and From Dust's PC Problems

Portal 2's Free DLC Just A Month Away

Remember when Valve said they were releasing some Portal 2 DLC for free? You'd be forgiven for forgetting, it's been a while since they announced it... But good news! Valve haven't forgotten, and they're gonna bring it to us sometime next month! But what's the content gonna be? Valve say the DLC will include "new test chambers for players, leaderboards, challenge mode for single and multiplayer modes, and more". "More" is the part that's got me excited. September can't come soon enough!

"and more!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

From Dust On PC Is An Experience You Might Wanna Avoid

Ubisoft are very unpredictable with their DRM handling, with some Ubisoft games requiring a constant internet connection and others making you sign in before playing, the problem with the former is that a past instance of their server being hacked meant that any games that used this method at that time couldn;t be played. Fortunately for Ubisoft though, a couple of weeks ago they went on record as saying that they wouldn't be using this method of DRM in from Dust, with Company Spokesperson Alex Momney:

"I can confirm that From Dust will not require online connection to play the single player campaign and challenges"

Well that's all well and good, until the game came out and it turned out, it actually would require an internet connection to play. dudes, not cool! This causes problems for Ubisoft in the form of droves of unhappy buyers (and gamers in general) with Steam even supposedly offering refunds. It doesn't help that the PC version is apparently a terrible version on From Dust anyway, but this is probably a mistake Ubisoft (or the gaming universe) won't soon forget.

Such a shame for a game that deserves to reach as big an audience as it can

Daily News - 16th and 17th August 2011 - Skyrim, Steam and Cheap Consoles

Skyrim And Steamworks, A Marriage Made In Heaven!

Those of you with PCs should be happy to hear that the good folks at Bethesda will be embracing Steam in a big way, making a part of the Steamworks platform. In short this means that in Skyrim you'll have access to all the Steamworks trimmings like cloud saving, voice communication and anti-cheating thingymadoodles. Basically, these frameworks are there to make games more stable and user friendly, which is a good thing no matter what game uses it... and a very good thing when a game like Skyrim uses it.

This game's gonna be truly amazing, I can sense it in my bones!

Grasshopper Manufacture Have A New Game: Black Knight Sword

Grasshopper Manufacture (Killer 7, No More Heroes, Shadows Of The Damned and the in-development Lollipop Chainsaw) have been showing off a new game at Gamescom in Germany, a future downloadable title called Black Knight Sword which is a side-scrolling platformer with some combat thrown in and a very unique visual style made to look like a puppet theatre. The game hadn't been revealed in any way before Gamescom but is definitely on my radar now. The video below was shot at the event, but the camera man apparently has a problem keeping his camera pointed at the game, so try to keep your temper long enough to actually appreciate the footage they're showing.

Modern Warfare 3 Will Have Dedicated Servers On PC

Greatest headline of all time. Explains the entire story. I need say no more!

I'll play the gane. Alot.

New Downsized (But Cheaper) Wii And PSP Announced

Within 2 days of each other, Nintendo and Sony announced new versions of both the Wii and the PSP. The new versions will remove features but cost less, so if you'd like a PSP with no online, and a Wii with no Gamecube support at all, you're in luck! For the low, low price of 99 Euros you could own a pointless PSP, and although Nintendo haven't given a price for this new Wii version, you can bet that a Wii without a port for Gamecube controllers is pointless... as for Super Smash Bros. Brawl it's pretty much essential.

Those were the days!

Trenched Finally On It's Way! But Not Called Trenched

Trenched, according to every game critic, is easily one of the highlights of 2011 so far, but has been kept away from us by a stupid as fuck lawsuit. A Portugese gentleman owns the European patent to the name which means Double Fine have been forced to rename the game for us especially. It took them a little while before they realised legal action would be too big a hassle but they finally just settled on a new name: Iron Brigade. The name's good, the game's good, but what wasn't good was the wait! Better late than never though guys!

KA-BOOM!!!

Daily News - 15th August 2011 - Counter Strike, 3DS and The Last Guardian

It's been a very slow news weekend, with hardly anything exciting going on at all (atleast in my opinion) but it's Monday (well, yesterday was...) so I'll gather up all the individual stories from the past few days and hopefully we'll have a good few days of news ahead!

New Counter-Strike On The Way!

The original Counter-Strike was/is kind of a big deal. Still played today by tonnes of people, and even still having a presence at large gaming tournaments it remains a big deal, which means anything new baring the Counter-Strike name is also a big deal. Valve haven't shown any screenshots yet, but it's logical to assume the game will look much nicer than the original. What's most interesting is that the game is also going to be downloadable on the PS3 and Xbox360, aswell as PC. The game's gonna be called Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and will feature new maps, old maps, weapons and characters, with some new gameplay modes thrown in. They've got me interested, if nothing else.

Love those silky smooth graphics...

Nintendo 3DS Ambassador Program Finally Has Some Details

So by now it's too late, but Nintendo were offering a deal whereby if you bought/had a 3DS before their price drop you were gonna get a bunch of NES and GBA games for free, that's still the case (awesomely) but now we have a few more details. It seems that Ambassadors will get the games in a sort of advanced beta state, with none of the extra additions the full downloadable releases will have but with the ability to add that extra functionality when it becomes available. All the games will feature full manuals, and the NES games will feature the ability to save at any time. I love the way they're doing this. They could easily just let Amabassadors have them free when they make them available to buy, but by allowing us to get them ahead of that release it makes us feel even more special. I'm pretty excited for my 20 free games!

I can't wait to play Metroid: Fusion again!

New Last Guardian Footage On Ico/Shadow Of The Colossus Compilation Disc

It's been a while since we heard anything new regarding The Last Guardian, but the game's certain to be amazing. Team ICO have a small, but proven track record, with Ico and Shadow Of The Colossus under their belt, so naturally the excitement around The Last Guardian is massive... Which makes the fact that we haven't heard anything new in ages all the more frustrating. Thankfully though, news came out today that a 12 minute look at the game will be featured on the disc along with the Ico/Shadow Of The Colossus high definition remakes. About time!

The game looks fantastic. I can't wait!

Daily News - 10th August 2011 - Assassin's Creed and Steam Trading

Assassin's Creed: Revelations Multiplayer Beta For Your PS3 Only

Assassin's Creed: Revelations is due out next year, and will follow the story of Ezio as he reaches old age. The game will bring back Brotherhood's cat-and-mouse multiplayer mode and, like Brotherhood, the beta will be exclusive to PS3. The beta will feature several character types and modes, like Manhunt and Artifact Assault. I didn't play Brotherhood so I've no idea if any of the things they've said will be in the beta are new or not, but you can see the full list of the content in the beta below:

Characters:

  • The Sentinel
  • The Vanguard
  • The Guardian
  • The Vizier
  • The Thespian
  • The Deacon
  • The Bombardier
  • The Trickster
  • The Champion

Maps:

  • Knight’s Hospital
  • Antioch
  • Constantinople

Mode:

  • Wanted
  • Manhunt
  • Deathmatch
  • Artifact Assault

And Ubisoft say that's "just a sample" of the content that will be in the actual game. Get excited assassin's Creed fans, and I'll just sit here play LoL...

I hope he falls...

Another Beta, This Time It's "Steam Trading"

Got a game on your Steam account that you don't want? Want to trade it with a friend for another game or a sweet in-game item? Well, now Steam will let you! Not sure why you'd want to do it, but it's always nice to have the option... isn't it?

If nothing else I like the simplicity of the interface

Daily News - 8th and 9th August 2011 - Kim Jong-il, Owlboy and Freddy Krueger

How is Kim Jong-il Funding War? Why, With MMO Gold Farming Ofcourse!

Last week the New York Times discovered that gold farming was occuring in Dungeon Fighter and Lineage (2 MMOs popular in Korea) after arresting 5 individuals with ties to hackers based in Northern China. The group made about $6,000,000 in profits with 55% of it distributed amongst the group and that some of that 55% was forwarded to Korean agents by order of the government. The hackers come from some of Korea's most well-respected universities, and report back to the same section of the government that supposedly deals in narcotics and illegal weapons trafficking to raise funds for whatever evilness Kim Jong-il wants to spend them on. Wow, massively intense stuff!

He needs the money for watermelons, clearly

Will Battlefield 3 Appear On Steam? It's Looking Dicey....

Remember when Crysis 2 was taken down off steam? Because EA do, and they had the following to say regarding Battlefield 3:

"We are intent on providing Battlefield 3 players with the best possible experience no matter where they purchase or play their game, and are happy to partner with any download service that does not restrict our ability to connect directly with our consumers. We hope to work out an agreement where Steam can carry Battlefield 3."

"EA offers games to all major download services. Unfortunately, Steam has adopted a set of restrictive terms of service which limit how developers interact with customers to deliver patches and other downloadable content. No other download service has adopted these practices."

On the upside though, the game's still looking superb, and the company aren't stopping anybody playing it, just acquiring it through steam. So long as I get to play it, I'll be happy as Larry.

This is an in-game screenshot. IN-GAME!!! Gorgeous!

Owlboy Trailer Looks All Kinds Of Good Jazz

This took me by surprise, I saw this trailer yesterday and couldn't help but think it looked super cool so I just had to share it. For your viewing pleasure, I present to you: Owlboy!

Duke Nukem Forever Made Money

There aren't any exact figures, but according to Take-Two Interactive the game made a profit. how big a profit is anyone's guess but it's safe to assume enough of one to justify further duke Nukem games. And we all cheer.

Oh Duke, you so.... something. Disgusting, probably. And Finally... Freddy Krueger In MK Explained. Ish.

Daily News - 4th and 5th August 2011 - PSVita, Diablo 3 and Sony's "Summer Of Arcade"

PSVita Pushed Back To 2012 For Us

Isn't it always the way, we get screwed on the release dates. Japan will get Vita's for Christmas but we won't, with Kaz Hirai (Sony's Executive Vice President) stating that the delay is so that the system has an adequete supply of launch games when it's released. That's not all though, he went on to comment on the Nintendo 3DS price slash:

"We packed so much into the device and made it very affordable, there is no need to lower the price just because somebody else that happens to be in the video game business decided that they were going to lower their price."

Talk about bitchy!

None of this util next year, I'm afraid!

Blizzard Want Diablo 3 To Come Out This Year... But Will It?

Diablo 3 is a big deal, one of the biggest deals of the past 12 months in fact, so it was encouraging when Blizzard said they were gonna aim to get the game out before the end of the year. In a recent call with investors though that was called somewhat into question by Blizzard CEO Michael Morhaime:

"There's a lot of moving parts in putting out a complicated release like Diablo III. We're not yet in beta. It's really going to come down to when the game is ready for prime-time. We'll know more when we hit beta and we'll know more when we put some of these new systems into test."

By "new systems" I presume they mean the items for cash auction house that was announced last week. Always encouraging to hear Blizzard is taking their time, they're one of the few companies that will actually use that time to make the game great.

I like this screenshot, reminds me of Guardian Shield in Starcraft 2

Sony's Summer Of Arcade Equivilant Will Be Called PSN PLAY

The Summer Of Arcade is a yearly thing Microsoft do where they release a handful of eagerly awaited downloadable games one after the other, over the period of a few weeks... but you already knew that. What you may not know is that the Summer Of Arcade makes them quite a bit of money, so it's only natural that Sony should give it a go for themselves. PSN PLAY is their answer, and will offer you 4 games over 4 weeks, with a bonus if you buy all 4.

  • Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike Online Edition
  • The Baconing
  • Betrayal
  • Renegade Ops

And the special bonus:

  • A voucher code to download Payday: The Heist when it comes out

To me, it just doesn't contain the calibur of games that Summer Of Arcade usually does. Ah well, this can only be good news for PS3 owners.

Cheap Street Fighter is good news for alot of you

Daily News - 3rd August 2011 - Borderlands 2 and the New And Improved Humble Indie Bundle

Borderlands 2 Is A Thing That's Happening

Borderlands was a massive surprise. Nobody was really expecting it to be particularly good but it came out of nowhere and grabbed the game world by the 'nads. Everybody who plays Borderlands loves it, so it's only natural that the inevitable sequel would be met by some tremendous excitement. Well yesterday, by the Facebook page, they revealed Borderlands 2 would be the cover game on this month's Game Informer and that more details will be shown in the magazine. I can't wait! They've said the game will feature new classes, skills, environments, weapons and enemies:

"Don’t expect just a couple bazillion more guns this time around. Gearbox is introducing new and more diverse environments, smarter and more powerful enemies, and an improved mission system capable of delivering a better story."

I couldn't be more pumped for this! Ahhhhhhhhhh!!!

That's a badass cover right there!

Daily News - 28th July to August 2nd 2011 - Diablo 3, DOTA 2 and Loads More!

Yep, that's right, I haven't updated the site in 5 days! As I said yesterday though I moved house on Sunday so I have a lilttle bit of an excuse.... But still, that won't stop me skimping on the news for you guys. So here we go, 5 days worth of gaming news crammed into 1 post!

Diablo 3 To Feature In-Game Item Auctions You Can Pay For With Cash!

I know, I know, first reaction is that this is the worst idea in the whole world but this is Blizzard. They've made WoW, they know how profitable making money in-game can be but the difference between WoW and Diablo 3 is that when somebody sells an item for real money in Diablo 3, Blizzard will take a little bit of the money. This means that, unlike in WoW, you can't get banned or go to jail for gold farming in Diablo 3. Blizzard released a statement for clarification:

"If there's a legal issue at all, it's likely in the "cash out" option. Blizzard is transferring some of the responsibility to the third-party provider and, in order to do that, players will need to choose, right away at time of sale, whether they want to keep the money in Battle.net, or take it out to cash with that extra percentage fee going to the third-party provider. Any money left in the system needs to stay there. Players won't be able to cash it out at any point in the future, except by buying Blizzard products and services. "We're not a bank," says Pardo. "We don't want to deal with all of those additional regulations. So that's going to be the responsibility of our third-party payment provider."

Personally I have no interest in these auctions, but Blizzard will still make Diablo 3 an awesome game so that on it's own is good enough for me.

I'll play the game, but won't touch the auctions... unless I Figure out how to make an awesome living with it!

Norwegian Retailer Coop Bans Violent Video Games

Good luck buying Modern Warfare or World of Warcraft (yes, that graphically violent game World of Warcraft) in Norway because Coop have deemed both of those games too violent to be sold. It's not just those 2 games though, there are a further 49 games that got pulled off the shelves including Homefront and Counter-Strike Source. It seems like basically anything with a gun is fair game to be taken down... which considering recent events is (obviously) an overreaction but still kind of understandable. It's unlikely the ban will be permanent but when a country's been through something as horrific as that, it's probably best not to rush things...

Of all the reasons to ban Homefront, it being too violent isn't one of them

Nintendo's Stock Drops 20%

Remember when Nintendo said they were gonna drop the 3DS's price by £80? Well it turns out there was a pretty good reason for that Because their overall sales have dropped 50% from the same period last year. That's alot. The news came out at about the same time the price-drop was announced and led to the companies stock to drop 20%. That's not great admittedly but I think a large portion of that is down to the 3DS being marketed poorly. The news led to many websites saying things like handhelds are dead and Nintendo's days are numbered but personally I think this is just a bit of a speedbump. Their products still appeal to a mass market, and once people realise what the 3DS has to offer different from a regular DS I think sales will start to increase. Make some good adverts Nintendo!

It's a good console! Honest!

Sony Buy Suckerpunch, Thus Keeps inFamous Exclusive

inFamous 2's reception has been somewhat mixed, but Sony obviously still think of it as a hot franchise because they bought Suckerpunch in a move that surprises... well, nobody. Sucker Punch's Managing Partner Brian Flemingin said in a press release:

"We've enjoyed an incredible relationship with Sony that has allowed us to combine our creative design capabilities with their guidance to make some of the best franchises to hit the PlayStation platforms, equally important, the relationship with SCE has provided us the flexibility and trust to take creative risks and invent new properties."

So there you go, Playstation fans rejoice! Presumably!

Playstation fans like infamous, I have heard...

DOTA 2 To Be Unveiled At Gamescom, Also, $1 Million!

Valve, in their infinite awesomeness, know that DOTA 2 is the kind of game you don't just release a few screenshots for and call it a reveal, so they're going to do it in style. at Gamescom there will be a DOTa 2 tournament with the winning team taking home 1 MILLION dollars! The teams are practicing as we speak (as you'd imagine with £1,000,000 on the line!) and we can view the tournament online when it happens on August 17 through August 21. Can't wait!

Morphling looks pretty sick! Cooler than Amumu though? I dunno... (Inside joke!)

Battlefield 3 Thunder Run!!!

At E3, we were shown gameplay footage of Battlefield 3, in particular an in-tank section that looked impressive, but graphically and in scale. Have a watch, and get as excited as I am!

My Apologies - Business As Usual Tomorrow

Really sorry for the lack of updates guys but I moved house today, hence the lack of updates over the weekend. Tomorrow after heaps of unpacking has happened we'll find out together what the past few days' gaming news has been. Can't wait! See you tomorrow!

This is pretty much how I feel right now!
